Primavera® Honors Leading-Edge Companies with 2007 Excellence Awards
The Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (Washington, DC) was named Winner of the Primavera Excellence Award for Public Sector category. The Office of Environmental Management was recognized for using Primavera as a tool to establish strong project management processes and deliver efficient projects which support the strategic mission of risk reduction and cleanup of the environmental legacy of the nation’s nuclear weapons program. The Office will achieve this goal by managing projects throughout the United States in the most efficient and effective manner.
The Office chose Primavera as the platform to integrate its individual site and project schedules into one EM integrated complex wide schedule. This provides senior management the timely and accurate information needed to make informed business decisions and establish the Office of Environmental Management as a Best in Class Project Management organization.

PMI 2007 Project of the Year - DOE’s Fernald Project
In 2007, PMI awarded its 2007 Project of the Year to DOE’s Fernald Closure Project. Fluor Corporation and DOE teamed up to cleanup six waste pits, remediate soil and groundwater, dispose and treat waste, demolish more than 300 buildings, and the ecological restoration of 900 acres of the site. This project was completed 12 years sooner and almost $8 billion below estimates. Successful completion included:
- Removing 31 million pounds of nuclear materials packaged and shipped off-site.
- Safely disposing of more than 3 million cubic yards of contaminated soil and building debris in and on-site engineered disposal facility.
- Remediating a total of 9,000 cubic yards.

PMI 2006 Project of the Year - DOE’s Rocky Flats Cleanup Site
In 2006, DOE’S Rocky Flats Closure Project was awarded the Project Management Institute (PMI) Project of the Year. DOE and Kaiser-Hill successfully partner in a 10-year effort to complete the largest most complex environmental cleanup project in United States history converting an environmental liability into a community assets completed the project nearly 50 years and $30 billion below initial estimates. Successful completion included:
- Removing more than 21 tons of weapons-useable nuclear materials.
- Decontaminating and Decommissioning 800 structures – more than 3 million sq. ft.
- Draining 30,000 liters of plutonium.
- Stabilizing and packaging 10 tons- of high content plutonium residue.
- Performing clean up actions at 130 sites.
- Shipping more than cubic meters of radioactive waste; among others.
