Mark W. Frei is currently the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Program Planning and Budget in the Office of Environmental Management.
Mark holds Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees in Nuclear Engineering. He joined the Atomic Energy Commission in 1974 as a reactor engineer in the breeder nuclear reactor development program.
Mark then worked in the Civilian Radioactive Waste Management program on the spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste repository. In positions of increasing management responsibility, Mark managed the systems engineering, waste package design, repository facility, insitu test facility design, and repository siting and licensing activities.
Mark joined the new Office of Environmental Management in 1989 to support DOE’s efforts to open WIPP for disposal of transuranic waste. He managed key EM waste management and spent nuclear fuel programs and projects. He has been a Deputy Assistant Secretary in EM since 1997, with responsibility for waste |
management, site closures, and now program planning and budget – i.e., responsibility for EM planning, budget, and program integration. In addition, Mark served as the Idaho Operations Office Manager in 2001-2002 overseeing the EM cleanup and the operation of the Idaho National Laboratory.
Mark received the Meritorious Executive Presidential Rank Award in 1997 and the Distinguished Executive Presidential Rank Award in 2006. |
