Environmental Management

Dr. Mary P. Neu is the Chief Scientist for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Environmental Management. She provides technical direction for all applied research and development performed in Environmental Management programs. Additionally, she develops policy and guidance and provides technical assistance for projects and operations.

Previously, Dr. Neu served as the first Associate Director for Chemistry, Life and Environmental Sciences at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In that role she was responsible for chemistry, earth science, and biology program execution and capabilities, institutional leadership of the science for measurements and forensics, and senior executive management. She was also responsible for the infrastructure for biological, chemical, geophysical, radiological, nuclear, and field studies. Under her leadership from 2006 through 2010, CLES Directorate grew into a vital organization, demonstrating programmatic performance, science and technology innovation, and a strong safety and security culture. The Directorate increased its programmatic budget by roughly $100 million to $310 million, while decreasing its indirect costs by 10%, and increasing its safety performance by 85%.

Prior to managing technical organizations, Dr. Neu lead multi-disciplinary research teams who conducted research and development for nuclear detection, actinide separations, biological and environmental science, nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear energy, nuclear waste isolation, environmental remediation, and heavy element chemistry, within Department of Energy and Department of Defense Programs.

Dr. Neu has published more than 50 publications in refereed journals, as well as several book chapters and sections in monographs and reference books. Neu serves on several councils and advisory groups for the Department of Energy and for technical societies. She is internationally recognized for her research on plutonium and actinide biogeochemistry.

Neu received B.S. degrees in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks (magna cum laude) and a Ph.D. in inorganic and nuclear chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. Neu conducted graduate and postdoctoral research at Lawrence Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories.
