James M. Owendoff serves in the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management
as the Chief Operations Officer, since October 2007.
From September 1995 to November 2003 and November 2005 to October 2007, Mr. Owendoff
served in various capacities in the Office of Environmental Management, to include
the Acting Assistant Secretary, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Deputy Assistant
Secretary for Environmental Restoration, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Science
and Technology, and Chief Office of Project Recovery. Mr. Owendoff also served in
the Department of Energy’s Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management from
November 2003 to November 2005 as the Associate Director for Integration.
Prior to this appointment, Mr. Owendoff served in the Office of the Deputy Under
Secretary of Defense for Environmental Security and served as Chief of the Air Force
Environmental Restoration Division. These assignments followed a series of successively
responsible leadership positions during his 25-year career in the U.S. Air Force,
which included assignments throughout the United States and overseas.
Mr. Owendoff was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant in June
1968, immediately following his graduation from Virginia Polytechnic Institute where
he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds
a Masters of Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University.
Mr. Owendoff is married to the former Marilyn Miller of Phoenix, Arizona. They have
two sons (Nate and John) and currently reside in Annandale, Virginia.
