DOE United Nations Packaging Specification Catalog

The United Nations (UN) Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods aims to ensure safe transportation within a uniform regulatory framework.

UN performance packaging which meet specifications in the Recommendations on the Transportation of Dangerous Goods address standard commercial types of packaging (i.e., open-head, carbon steel drums).

  • One specification may address multiple sizes (e.g., 5- 10-, 15-, 30-, and 55-gallon) of the same type of packagings.
  • Numerous UN packagings meet the US Department of Transportation (DOT) Specification 7A criteria.
  • Packaging with a UN marking does not mean the UN approves or certifies every item printed with their symbol.

The DOE Packaging Management Council (PMC) strives to provide minimum requirements for packaging specifications for UN performance-oriented packagings in a list on the EM portal. Vendors may access these specifications for preparing bid proposals and discussing issues with packaging and procurement personnel by contacting the PMC.
