Tonopah Test Range

Site Overview

The Tonopah Test Range, an Air Force munitions range and research and development site, is located north of the Nevada Test Site approximately 240 kilometers (150 miles) northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. The Tonopah Test Range comprises 1,616 square kilometers (624 square miles) and is also surrounded on three sides by the Nellis Air Force Range and to the north by Bureau of Land Management open range.

Site Descriptions

The Tonopah Test Range was historically used by DOE and DOD for research and development of ordnance delivery systems, electronic training missions and other activities. Since 1956, the Tonopah Test Range has been managed by DOE and its predecessor agencies under a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Air Force.

Currently, the Tonopah Test Range is undergoing environmental restoration through the Industrial Sites Project. Of ongoing concern is maintaining the safety of the site, instituting long-term surveillance programs and completing all corrective actions necessary.
