Ashtabula
Site Overview
The Ashtabula Closure Project facility is located one mile south of Lake Erie
approximately 50 miles northeast of Cleveland, Ohio. The site is owned by
private owner Reactive Metals Inc. (RMI).
Site Descriptions
The Ashtabula site opened in 1962 and ended production in 1988. During this
time, the site received uranium for processing under contract to the U. S.
Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessor agencies. Processing involved
the extrusion and/or forging of depleted, normal and slightly enriched uranium
metal as well as experimental quantities of thorium metal, into driver and
target elements for the Hanford and Savannah River weapons program reactors.
The Ashtabula Closure Project goals were to safely remediate facilities,
disposition of equipment, and remediation of affected land areas and
groundwater. Work associated with final remediation and completion of DOE’s
responsibilities at the Ashtabula Closure Project were completed in 2006. DOE
returned 42 acres at the Ashtabula site to Reactive Metals Incorporated for
unrestricted industrial reuse. As part of the cleanup, DOE safely transported
over 1.1 million metric tons of waste to off-site commercial facilities.
