Columbus Environmental Management
Project - King Avenue
The King Avenue site consisted of nine affected buildings, located within the
city of Columbus, Ohio. The affected area under control of the project covers
approximately 2.4 hectares (6 acres), and is bounded by The Ohio State
University, a high-density residential area, and the Olentangy River. The King
Avenue site was historically a part of the government’s fuel and fabrication
program. Activities included nuclear research which encompassed the processing
and machining of enriched, natural and depleted uranium and thorium;
fabricating fuel elements; analyzing radiochemicals; and studying powder
metallurgy. The principal contaminated media at the King Avenue site were
facilities and equipment. All wastes, primarily uranium and thorium, were
shipped offsite for disposal at the Hanford Site in Washington State, or at the
commercial disposal facility, Envirocare of Utah. Remediation was completed in
FY 2000 and the facilities were released to Battelle.
