FAQs

Q: What is meant by disposition of scrap metals?

A: Disposition of scrap metals includes unrestricted release for recycling and reuse, permanent disposal, restricted release for DOE internal use, restricted release for recycling, and recycle for industrial radiological use.

Q: Why did DOE extend the schedule for publication of the Draft PEIS?

A: The Department of Energy has delayed publication of the Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) on Scrap Metals Disposition in order to fully consider a recent decision by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) related to the control of slightly radioactive materials. The NRC announced it intends to move forward with rulemaking, which may set new standards for the control of material that would be protective of public health and the environment. A publication date for the Draft PEIS will be established this winter (2004/2005)

Q: Where can I send comments?

A: Correspondence addressing the PEIS should be addressed to: John W. Neave, II, Office of Technical Program Integration, EM-41, ATTN: Metals Disposition PEIS, Office of Environmental Management, U.S. Department of Energy, 20400 Century Boulevard, Germantown, Maryland 20874-1290. Otherwise, send facsimiles to Metals Disposition PEIS at (202)586-4314, or electronic mail to: Metals.Disposition.PEIS@em.doe.gov.
