The Mission Support Alliance (MSA) at Hanford along with the Department
of Energy (DOE)-Richland (DOE-RL) field office held a joint "State of IT
at Hanford" forum Wednesday September 30, 2009. The timing of this presentation
was coordinated with a planned visit with staff from DOE Headquarters (DOE-HQ).
In attendance from DOE-HQ were Jeanne Beard, Director, Office of Corporate Information
and Services, John Dunlap, Deputy Associate CIO for Energy Information Technology
Services (EITS), Stan Wujcik, Information Technology Specialist, Office of Corporate
Information and Services, and other staff and support personnel from DOE-HQ. The
local leadership team including Gene Higgins, DOE-RL Information Technology Project
Manager, Dana Kranz, DOE-RL CIO, Frank Armijo MSA Director and CIO, Ron Nelson,
CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company (CHPRC) CIO, Joe Vacca, Washington River
Protection Solutions LLC (WRPS) CIO, and other representatives of the Hanford
cleanup contractors and the MSA IT services support team at Hanford.
Gene Higgins, Frank Armijo and Ron Nelson representing the Hanford cleanup contractors
presented a vision and outline for how IT is aligned with the Hanford Cleanup Mission
and milestones. The topics included specific projects and innovations agreed to by
multiple contractors supporting worker productivity and efficiency. The new "2015
IT Vision and Beyond" Vision was also presented which provides a focus on those
activities and initiatives planned for the next six years and their alignment to
the cleanup mission. The new "2015 IT Vision and Beyond” is the result of a MSA-hosted
process improvement session using Lockheed Martin Six Sigma Blackbelts involving DOE-RL,
MSA and Hanford Site cleanup contractors. Working together they developed objectives and
projects that support the DOE cleanup mission and milestones and aligns with the DOE-RL and
DOE-Office of River Protection (DOE-ORP) strategic visions.
The 2015 IT vision illustrates how proposed and planned IT services and innovations align with
specific Hanford Site cleanup commitments, including key Tri-Party Agreement milestones. The
key elements of the 2015 IT Vision and associated initiatives and projects include a multi-contractor
collaborative IT vision; alignment with DOE Environmental Management (EM) Strategic
Plan; proposed innovations and technology Infusions to support cleanup activities; and commitments made to DOE-RL
and the Hanford Site contractors by the MSA as related to the IT solutions and services provided.
Jeanne Beard spoke to the forum about the DOE EM Strategic Vision which provided an opportunity to discuss
and ensure that the local plan and vision was aligned with the strategies promoted by DOE EM. Jeanne’s
presentation identified many commonalities in our approach and long term goals.

To underscore the teamwork involved in the creation of the vision and joint commitments to support the
initiatives, the session concluded with Gene Higgins, DOE-RL, Frank Armijo, MSA, Ron Nelson, CHPRC, and
Joe Vacca, WRPS signing the "2015 IT Vision and Beyond" placard and presenting it to Jeanne Beard.
Prior to the State of IT at Hanford presentation, the DOE-HQ team toured the Hanford Site to see firsthand
how Information Technology is directly supporting the cleanup including; leveraging technologies that provide
for efficiencies in work execution, documentation generation, and enhanced worker safety. The tour included a
visit to the construction site of the Combined Community Communications Facility (CCCF) on Rattlesnake Mountain
and the 100 and 200 Areas of the Hanford Site. Another focus of the tour is how the site is leveraging WiMAX
wireless technologies to improve workforce communications and field automation. Touring the site enabled a visual display of the value that IT brings to mission of supporting cleanup and environmental monitoring initiatives, maximizing
field time for the crews performing work and for the supervisors that provide oversight and direction.
